The Ghosts at Sawyers Snell

Back in the 1960's Carolyn Robertus and I used to "hang out." We'd haul Cindy, Doug, Danny, Dennis and Robbie around with us. For instance, the weekly grocery shopping from store to store chasing sales, using coupons and stopping at the day-old bakery.

The picture reminded me of this one specific Halloween. Carolyn brought the three boys over to our house to go Trick or Treating with Robbie and Cindy in our neighborhood on 18th street. There weren't many houses out where Carolyn and Leonard lived. We also drove over to my mom and dad's to get treats and let them see the costumes. Mom took the picture in front of their fireplace on Everett street.

With enough candy to make them sick and rot their teeth, we needed to find something else to do. This was after we ditched the sacks of candy. We started talking about Sawyer's Snell which was an old pond located by the railroad tracks and Salt Crick. Bob, as a kid, used to ice skate on this pond. It was a real backwoods kind of place with the only access down an old, dark gravel road. By now it's late at night and very dark. We started telling the kids about how the ghosts always dance at Sawyer's Snell on Halloween. Of course, they wanted to see this!

Away we went.

Carolyn was driving very cautiously down this dark, lonely road, and the kids were watching carefully for ghosts. We warned them to be very quiet so the ghosts wouldn't notice we were around. Then I screamed, "Carolyn! get out of here fast. They've spotted us, and they are coming; a whole bunch of them."

Showing you what an imagination can do, Cindy and the boys started yelling for Carolyn to get the heck out of there. It was hilarious.

Later the boys and Cindy accused us of just making the whole thing up. But Carolyn and I never let on to a thing.

We were lucky they didn't have nightmares all night long.
