Summer Time
This picture reminded me about the best part of summer-my birthday. When you enlarge the image, I have identified as many kids as I could remember.
During the hot days of summer with no air conditioning, we had a way to cool off. We put on our bathing suits and ran through sprinklers in the yard. Another game was to fill a wash tub with water and dunk our heads. We made it a contest by seeing who could hold their breath the longest.
A quieter game we played was Jacks while sitting on the sidewalk in the shade of a tree. We had skill levels to go through. As soon as a player missed, the jacks and ball were passed to the next player.
The Ice Truck was a welcome sight. Before the days when the electric refrigerator was invented, we had Ice Boxes to keep food chilled. Periodically, an Ice Truck would bring blocks of ice to replenish them. We loved to chase the truck down the street and grab pieces of ice from the back of the truck. It was definitely not sanitary. We lived.
