Winter
There was no reason to stay in the house during the winter months especially when it snowed. It seems we had more snow and larger snowfall amounts in the 1940's. We loved to build snowmen or snow forts and have snowball fights. If the snow packed just right, we could dig tunnels and crawl through them.
In Nebraska, it always seems like sometime around January we get the January Thaw. The sky would be such a beautiful blue, and the sun would be just warm enough to start melting the snow. We would find something to be a boat, like a stick or a piece of tinfoil, anything that would float in the water running down the street and have races. Of course we would get soaked right through our boots and mittens. Mom would call me to come home to get dry and warm up for dinner. As I would thaw, it seemed like my whole body would tingle and burn. Mom would make me run cold water on my hands and feet. I would cry. Mom would swear I was not going outside to play again until spring.
There weren't any hills to go sledding close to North 25th Street. If we wanted to go sledding, we had to make do by piling up the snow and making a small sled run. If the street happened to get snow packed and slick, we could run and do a belly flop on the sled. And if we were lucky, one person would pull the sled while the rest of us rode.
