Daddy Was A Hero

I would guess the year to be about 1918 when Daddy would have been nine years old. The family had a dairy farm outside of Kearney. Uncle Jess and Daddy would deliver the milk to a tuberculosis hospital in Kearney. Orlo sometimes tagged along.

On one occasion, Orlo fell into a canal and would have drowned. Jess and Daddy pulled him to safety.

They were both awarded a medal for saving his life.

A sad postscript to this story is that Orlo died of cancer in his late teens.

Picture Identification

Daddy is on the left, Uncle Jess in the middle and Orlo on the right. You can see the medals pinned to their chests.

As a side note, I understand his mother was very upset with her son, Lyle, when she saw the picture and noticed his shoes were not polished.
